GRSC FINISHES 3RD IN USPL GREAT LAKES CONFERENCE

The 2024 Fall season for Grand Rapids SC (GRSC) in the UPSL Great Lakes Conference was a rollercoaster of highs and lows, culminating in a commendable third-place finish. Here's how the season unfolded:

Season Kickoff: GRSC started the campaign on a sour note, facing a disappointing 2-4 defeat against DUKA FC. Despite leading 2-0 at halftime, the second half saw a collapse, with the team conceding four goals.

Early Highlights: Spirits were lifted as we clinched a victory in our home opener against United Soccer Stars, setting a positive tone for home games. The momentum continued as we secured an impressive away win against Drita SC, an Albanian team with an enviable pitch known for its immaculate, well-prepared grass surface.

The Mehney Field Experience: Our first home game at Mehney Field under the crisp, fall night sky was against league rivals Detroit United. Despite drawing over 200 fans to create the liveliest atmosphere seen in Grand Rapids for men's soccer in years, the chill of the night was nothing compared to the chill of losing our first game at our new home venue, with a scoreline of 1-3.

Redemption and Regular Season Stretch: Three weeks later, we managed a draw against Detroit United on their turf, providing some redemption but leaving us wanting more. However, GRSC then embarked on a fantastic run of wins to close out the regular season, showcasing the team's resilience and tactical growth.

Playoffs: The postseason started with a rematch against DUKA FC. Unfortunately, the game was played on a pitch far below regulation size, which hindered our ability to leverage our speed and wide-play. This led to a scrappy, chaotic match where DUKA, bolstered by current professional players, managed to capitalize on the few chances they got, ending our playoff journey.

Season Reflection: Despite the early setbacks and the playoff loss, finishing third in the conference is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and talent within GRSC. The team not only showed growth throughout the season but also built a stronger connection with the Grand Rapids community, setting the stage for an even brighter future. We thank our players, coaches, especially coaches Edis Maric, Fabian Rodriguez and TJ VanSlooten, and our incredible fans for their support throughout this memorable season. Here's to building on this foundation next year!
