GRSC Welcomes Tony Deakin, Former GRFC Captain, to Coaching Staff

Grand Rapids Soccer Club is thrilled to announce the addition of Tony Deakin to our technical staff as Sports Performance Coach and Assistant Coach.

A local legend in West Michigan, Tony brings unmatched experience and passion to GRSC. As the former captain of Grand Rapids FC (GRFC) — the former major semi-professional team in the area — Tony led the club during one of its most memorable eras.

Tony ranks second in all-time appearances for GRFC, showcasing his consistency and dedication on the pitch. Under his leadership, GRFC drew crowds of over 6,000 fans in key matches, including a club-record attendance of 6,912 for the NPSL Midwest Regional Final. The team reached the NPSL regional finals in 2016 and built a passionate following that still resonates in Grand Rapids today.

He played collegiately at Davenport University, where he was a four-year standout, team captain, and earned All-American honors. Beyond playing, he has coached in high-level environments, including the ECNL and U.S. Soccer Development Academy.

Currently serving as Girls Academy Director at Midwest United SCOR and Fitness Coordinator for the City of Kentwood, Tony is a NASM Certified Personal Trainer with a deep passion for blending sports science and athletic development. He holds a USSF National B License and is known for creating high-performance training environments that prioritize long-term player success.

“Tony is an incredibly energetic guy who knows the game inside out,” says Manager TJ VanSlooten. “We’re not just gaining a world-class performance coach; we’re bringing in someone who deeply understands the local soccer community and has their respect. We couldn’t be more excited to have him on board.”

In addition to his coaching role, Tony will also contribute as a part-time player for GRSC.

Welcome, Tony! We look forward to seeing your impact on and off the field as we build something special together.
