GRSC Signs Former Mexican National Team Coach Manuel Vidrio To Coaching Staff
Grand Rapids, MI – Grand Rapids Soccer Club is thrilled to announce the addition of Manuel Vidrio Solís to its coaching staff for the men’s semi-professional team. A former Mexican international with extensive playing and coaching experience at the highest levels of the game, Vidrio brings world-class expertise, leadership, and passion to GRSC.
Vidrio enjoyed a decorated 15-year professional playing career as a rugged, combative central defender. He made 34 appearances for the Mexico national team, including all four of Mexico’s matches at the 2002 FIFA World Cup in South Korea and Japan. Under head coach Javier Aguirre, Vidrio was a key starter and fixture in the backline as Mexico advanced through the group stage (victories over Croatia and Ecuador, a draw with Italy) before falling in the Round of 16. He was a trusted, high-value member of the squad during qualifiers, the 2001 Copa América (where Mexico finished as runners-up), and the tournament itself.
Domestically, Vidrio began his senior career with one of Mexico’s most iconic clubs, C.D. Guadalajara (Chivas), before moving through stints with Deportivo Toluca and Estudiantes Tecos. He reached the pinnacle of his club career with C.F. Pachuca, where he became one of the league’s most effective and respected defenders. Lining up alongside fellow Mexico internationals, Vidrio helped Pachuca capture three Liga MX titles: Invierno 1999, Invierno 2001, and Apertura 2003. He also had a brief experience abroad in Spain’s La Liga with CA Osasuna before returning to Pachuca and concluding his playing days with a short stint at C.D. Veracruz in 2006.
Following retirement, Vidrio seamlessly transitioned into coaching. He served as an assistant coach for the Mexican National Team from 2009–2010, working alongside Javier Aguirre in preparations for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He then joined the technical staff of La Liga side Real Zaragoza in Spain as an assistant coach in 2010. Back in Mexico, Vidrio has coached professional and affiliate teams, including roles with Club de Futbol Ballenas Galeana Morelos and Tecos FC (where he served as manager).
Manuel Vidrio and his wife have recently relocated to Grand Rapids, and the local soccer community could not be more grateful for his presence. His elite playing and coaching pedigree—highlighted by World Cup appearances, Liga MX championships, and international technical staff experience—represents the highest level of any known player or coach currently based in Michigan.
“We are incredibly fortunate to have Manuel join the GRSC family,” said club leadership. “Not only is he a soccer wizard with unmatched tactical insight and experience, but he is also an extremely kind, humble, and approachable person. The value and expertise he brings to our men’s team and the broader club will be immeasurable. He is excited to help build GRSC into a bigger, stronger organization and already has many innovative ideas we will be collaborating on.”
This addition marks the first major international soccer figure to come through GRSC, and the club firmly believes it will not be the last. Vidrio will focus on elevating the men’s semi-professional team while also contributing to the growth and expansion of the entire club— from player development to overall infrastructure and vision.
With this staff enhancement, Grand Rapids SC has taken a significant step in positioning itself as a more recognizable force not just in Michigan, but on the national and international soccer stage. The club extends its deepest thanks to Manuel Vidrio for choosing GRSC as his next chapter and looks forward to the many successes ahead under his guidance.
Welcome to the Grand Rapids family, Manuel! ¡Vamos GRSC!
